Djokovic wins first round of Australian Open tennis in two years

Novak Djokovic (5th, Serbia) won the Australian Open tennis tournament (total prize money of 76.5 million Australian dollars, about 66.26 billion won), which was held in two years, with a complete victory.

Djokovic defeated Roberto Carballes Baena (75th, Spain) 3-0 (6-3 6-4 6-0) in the first round of the men’s singles on the second day of the tournament held in Melbourne, Australia on the 17th.

Djokovic, who is trying to win the Australian Open for the 10th time in his career, faces the winner of the match between Hugo Delien (131st, Bolivia) and Enzo Cuaco (191st, France) in the second round.

He arrived at Melbourne Airport last year to compete in this tournament, but eventually had to return to Serbia before the start of the tournament because he did not get a new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) vaccine.

He stayed in a quarantine facility and twice filed a court case against the Australian government, but his participation in the tournament was ultimately canceled.

Djokovic has won 22 consecutive victories at the Australian Open, including three consecutive victories from 2019 to 2021 after losing to Jeong Hyeon (27) in the round of 16 in 2018.

If Djokovic wins this tournament, he will win the Australian Open 10 times and tie the record (22) for the most wins in men’s singles in major tournaments.

The record for the most wins in men’s singles in major tournaments is currently held by Rafael Nadal (2nd, Spain) with 22.
