MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said today that the pitch clock has shaved an average of 26 minutes per game since its introduction this year.

Manfred said he sees this as a positive and will continue to implement the rule in the postseason.

Last year, the average time per game was 3 hours and 4 minutes. This year, it’s down to 2 hours and 38 minutes.

The pitch clock is a rule that says pitchers must pitch within 15 seconds with no runners on base and 20 seconds with runners in scoring position. Batters must also step up to the plate early. A batter must step up to the plate with at least 8 seconds left on the clock. This means they have 7 seconds to get ready to hit if there are no runners on base and 12 seconds to get ready to hit if there are runners on base.

If the pitcher violates the pitch clock rule, the ball count goes up by one. Conversely, if a batter violates it, they’ll be called for one strike.

Meanwhile, Major League Baseball credits the defensive shift restrictions with a slight increase in league-wide batting average to 0.248, up from 0.243 last year.
