This season, with the first competition of the season scheduled in Haenam in March, in the jump ball, we met the players who are expected to be active in each school in the south high school this season.
The player to be introduced this time is Ko Chan-yu (191cm, G, F) of Samil Commercial High School.
Known as the younger brother of Ko Chan-hyeok (Anyang KGC), Ko Chan-yu is considered a decent tall guard in high school. He is a player with a good understanding of breakthrough attacks with light movements, and last year he was selected for the U16 national team and accumulated experience in international competitions.
Even though he was a sophomore, he started as a starting pitcher and played in 28 games last season, averaging 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds and 5.2 assists, and stood out in many ways. Until last year, he was a sub-option behind Lee Ju-young and Kang Ji-hoon (Yonsei University), but this season, his role as an ace in the team has increased.
Samil Commercial High School coach Jeong Seung-won, who is coaching him, said, “The team’s power has weakened compared to last year. Until last year, he was in a position to follow his junior brothers, but this year, (Go) Chanyu’s role in the team has grown even more.”
He continued, “Currently, I am practicing a lot in the technical part of my shooting ability. As he is in his third year, he now has to be the ace on the team, and he also has to play the role of leader. He should be able to save his teammates while playing his own,” he said.
Coach Jeong said, “This season, you have to play from point guard to power forward. Maybe even block the opposing center. I want him to grow into an all-rounder player. No matter who sees it, I try to make (the late) Chanyu hear that he is pretty good at basketball.”
Koh Chan-yu, who will be active as the team’s first option in the 2023 season, said, “I am preparing for the season by practicing a lot with college teams and doing shooting training hard.” While taking a lot of activity, he has to play the role of holding the center and leading when team play,” he explained the task given to him.
Finally, he said, “The team goal, as always, is to win. Personally, I want to be evaluated as a player beyond the high school level.”
