The Mets hired Stearns, the former Milwaukee president, as their new president of baseball operations, according to ESPN and other U.S. sports media outlets on Wednesday morning (Aug. 13).

Stearns, a Harvard graduate, was named general manager of the Brewers in September 2015 and promoted to president in 2019. Since his arrival, Milwaukee has established itself as a powerhouse in the National League Central, reaching the postseason in four straight seasons from 2018 to 2021. Stearns stepped down as Milwaukee’s president in October 2022.

A native of Manhattan, New York, Stearns reportedly grew up rooting for the Mets and has been in the running for the front office ever since.

The Mets have been aggressively investing in the organization, signing Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, and others, but have underperformed this year. As of the 13th, the Mets are 65-78 and in fourth place in the National League East. A postseason berth is effectively out of reach.
